I will never have spinal fusion surgery for my scoliosis, so I find it silly to subject myself to radiation from X-rays every year. The X-rays wouldnât change how Iâm dealing with my scoliosis. However, I wanted to include X-rays of my back in this book to show everyone what scoliosis looks like, and prevent you from being shocked when you go into the orthopedist for the first time and see the X-ray of your own spiral spine.
I called my one-and-only pediatrician in Minnesota to get copies of the initial X-rays that were taken when I was 14 years-old. These were the only childhood X-rays I had ever had. Lo and behold, the practice had discarded my entire patient file. Eighteen years of my life â gone. My parents hadnât thought to get a copy of my scoliosis X-rays at the time, so those were gone as well. I now know that itâs common practice for files to be discarded after a number of years. I would recommend that you get copies of everything and keep your own file up-to-date.
So, now I needed to schedule an appointment with an orthopedist to get X-rays taken. I was a bit curious as to where my curve was measuring, since Iâd had two kids. My hormones have been all over the place for a few years, which I know affects a scoliotic spine.
I just needed a spinal X-ray, thatâs it. After waiting for over a half-hour in the orthopedistâs waiting room for my scheduled appointment, I was finally ushered into the X-ray room. The technician told me that the only metal I needed to remove was my belt, which seemed odd. During my X-ray, I asked the technician if I could get an additional X-ray of my rib rotation so I could get a baseline for that measurement. She said they donât normally do that, which means Iâd have to rely on my scoliometer for that. A scoliometer is a simple device that looks like a rounded level used to roughly determine the degree of rotation in the scoliotic back. Itâs about the size of an adultâs stretched-out hand. Body practitioners can measure clientsâ backs with this before and after lessons to see if a decrease in vertebral rotation has been achieved during the lesson.
While leaving the X-ray room, I asked for a copy of the X-rays for my records. The woman obliged and few minutes later, I walked back to my room, X-rays in hand, to wait for the orthopedist. After I was back in the room by myself, I flipped on the X-ray light board, threw my X-rays up and steam started spewing out my ears. I was only given a portion of my full back X-ray. My entire major scoliotic curve wasnât even fully shown on my X-ray. Argh!
On top of that, all the metal in my bra, my cross necklace, buttons on my sweater, and metal on my jeans were jumbling up my back X-ray. The metal wonât necessarily
